Topic Blueprints for Safety: VDCs Role in Safer Construction

Speaker Matt Jacobson, CIM-BIM

Matthew Jacobson, an industry leader and advocate for technology-driven transformation in construction.

Matt has been immersed in the world of CAD, BIM, and VDC since 1994, when a high school drafting class sparked a deep interest in the power of virtual modeling and team collaboration. Over the past three decades, Matt has built a career that bridges technology, field execution, and operational excellence. His journey has taken him from detailed mechanical drafting roles to national leadership in construction innovation, where he’s helped teams rethink how we plan, model, and build.

Today, Matt serves as the Construction Technology Leader at T.W. Frierson, where he is responsible for aligning technology strategy with business goals across the organization. In this role, he leads initiatives to adopt and optimize cutting-edge tools—from project management platforms to drones, robotics, AR/VR, and data analytics. His work connects the field, project management, and IT, ensuring that technology directly supports safety, quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction. He’s especially passionate about standardizing digital workflows and empowering teams through training, implementation, and support.

A true mentor and lifelong learner, Matt is known for his humility, humor, and ability to translate complex ideas into practical, impactful solutions. He has an unwavering belief in elevating people through knowledge. He is married to a wonderful woman and has a 5-year-old daughter.  He’s also a 20-year cancer survivor whose personal resilience and integrity have left a lasting impression on colleagues across the industry.

Matt will be presenting on the role of VDC in advancing safety—how virtual construction not only improves coordination and efficiency but also plays a critical role in protecting people on the job site.
